I’m Dr. Ron London, owner of Healthy Choice Physical Therapy, PLLC right here in Houston, TX. Throughout my years as a physical therapist, I’ve come across countless misconceptions about our profession.
Today, I’m going to set the record straight by debunking some of the most common myths about physical therapy.
Myth #1
Physical Therapy is Only for Injuries & Accidents
Truth: Physical therapy can be beneficial after an injury or serious auto accident. However, that’s just the tip of the iceberg as far as the benefits of physical therapy is concerned.
We also help with managing chronic conditions, improving mobility, sports injuries, and even aiding in preventive care. Physical therapy is more than addressing injuries; it’s also a component of prudent self-care.
Myth #2
Any Exercise Can Replace a Professional Physical Therapist
Truth: It’s good to be active. However, general exercise and structured physical therapy are different ball games.
PTs undergo extensive training to create tailored programs to address specific problems. We use evidence-based techniques to ensure the best outcomes for you.
Myth #3
Physical Therapy Is Painful
Truth: “No pain, no gain” doesn’t always apply here. While some discomfort might be expected as you work through certain exercises, our goal isn’t to cause pain. We’re here to help you heal.
Always communicate with your therapist about any discomfort you experience.
Myth #4
Surgery is the Only Answer
Truth: Surgery is often seen as the last resort or the ultimate solution to some health issues.
Numerous studies have shown that lots of conditions can be treated effectively with physical therapy, sometimes negating the need for surgery altogether. Always consider getting an evaluation from a physical therapist before opting to go under the knife.
Myth #5
You Need a Doctor’s Referral for Physical Therapy
Truth: Not always! In many states, including Texas, you can see a physical therapist directly without a physician’s referral. It’s called Direct Access. However, some insurance policies might require a referral, so it’s always a good idea to double-check.
Myth #6
Physical Therapy Is Too Expensive
Truth: Consider this – how much would chronic pain or long-term injury cost you in the long run?
Physical therapy is often a cost-effective alternative to surgery and long-term medications. Additionally, many insurance plans cover PT services. Here at Healthy Choice Physical Therapy, we’re happy to discuss payment options to ensure you get the care you deserve.
Myth #7
Online Videos Can Substitute for Physical Therapy
Truth: Online resources are not tailor-made for you. The needs of each individual are unique. A one-size-fits-all approach from a generic video might not address your issue. Even worse, it might exacerbate your problem. There’s no substitute for personalized care.
Myth #8
Once You Start Physical Therapy, You’ll Need It Forever
Truth: Our objective is to get you back on your feet, figuratively and literally! While some conditions might require ongoing care, many patients complete their PT programs in a matter of weeks.
If you’ve ever hesitated to consider physical therapy due to any of these myths, I hope this post has brought some clarity. Remember, our primary goal at Healthy Choice Physical Therapy is to guide you towards a healthier, pain-free life.
